Bobby Thomason, quarterback...

...for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1950s, died at age 85. I had never heard of Thomason, but what I want to know is, why do early pictures of quarterbacks always show them jumping up in the air?

My theory - due to the lack of a face mask, the linemen were probably a lot more upright than today. This would have required quarterbacks to jump to make a clean throw.
