Damn the injury reports!

Let's get going on this weekend's games, shall we? Here are my predictions for 5A (upsets in bold):

Joliet Catholic over Montini
Lincoln-Way West over Sycamore
Sacred Heart-Griffin over Highland
Washington over University

JCA at Montini is my Game of the Week and you can read all about it here. I'll be live tweeting it @BoringOldWhtGuy.

As for No. 6 Lincoln-Way West (10-1) at No. 2 Sycamore (11-0), the visiting Warriors will be getting a second chance at Sycamore after they lost to the Spartans, 34-21, in Week One. Since then, they defeated Bloom, Andrew, Bradley-Bourbonnais, Lincoln-Way North, Bronzeville and Glenbard South. Besides LWW, the Spartans also beat North Lawndale, DeKalb, Geneseo, Rochelle, Kaneland, Yorkville, Antioch and Nazareth.

The only other time the two schools met was last year (home team in CAPS):

2012: SYCAMORE 19, Lincoln-Way West 13

Is the third time a charm?

The next contest pits two undefeated teams, No. 4 Highland (11-0) at No. 1 Sacred Heart-Griffin (11-0). The visiting Bulldogs beat seven teams with losing records. They did, however, defeat Mattoon, Jersey, Carbondale and Limestone. The Cyclones, meanwhile, downed Rochester, Taylorville, Jacksonville, Whitehaven (TN), Chatham Glenwood (twice) and Peoria Richwoods.

The only game I can find between the two was last year:

2012: Sacred Heart-Griffin 55, Highland 16

Finally, No. 3 University (11-0) is at No. 2 Washington (11-0), another matchup of unbeatens. The Pioneers of University defeated Bloomington Central Catholic, Pontiac, Mahomet-Seymour, MacArthur and Jacksonville. The home team Panthers also beat Bloomington Central Catholic, as well as Pekin, Limestone, Peoria and Mount Vernon.

(By the way, Bloomington Central Catholic played Washington and Normal in the first two weeks of the season. The Saints were outscored, 97-30, but still managed to finish at 6-4. Pekin, meanwhile, has its own history which you can read about here.)

The only previous meeting that I know of was in the second round of the playoffs last year:

2012: WASHINGTON 30, University 6

Tomorrow: A look at 6A.
