Jimmy Carter may not have been...
...the best president ever. In fact, he may not even qualify as the best president of the 1970s (Nixon, Ford, Carter--not exactly a Murderer's Row). But his post-presidency has to rank right up there with the very best. In fact, you'd have to go all the way back to William Howard Taft, who served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1921-30, to find such a productive post-presidency.
