The Northwestern Wildcats...

...lost a heartbreaker yesterday to the Auburn Tigers, 38-35, in overtime. It was a wild ride with many twists and turns, and I think my heart may have actually stopped once or twice. Senior quarterback Mike Kafka (you gotta love that name) from St. Rita "threw for a career-best 532 yards and 4 touchdowns, completing 47 of 78 passes, both Outback Bowl records." He also threw five interceptions (two in the end zone and two that resulted in Auburn touchdowns) after a regular season in which he only threw seven.

I guess you could say that Kafka turned in a mixed performance.

I'm afraid the same couldn't be said about Northwestern kicker Stefan Demos, who was 0-for-3 in field goal attempts (one which would have won the game in regulation time and one which would have tied the game in overtime) and missed a crucial extra point that forced the Wildcats to go for two to tie the game. To top it all off, Demos left the game with an injury.

I'd say he had a bad New Year's Day.

My only hope is that Demos doesn't go home and have some great aunt who doesn't follow sports ask him, "Hey, didn't you guys have a game over the break or something? How did that go?"
