Mount Carmel rolled over Fenwick...

...on Saturday, 41-7, and St. Rita blanked Brother Rice, 24-0.

Mt. Carmel improved its record to 2-1 after being stunned by Simeon, 47-41, in the season opener at Soldier Field.

Coach Frank Lenti's option-style offense is firing on all cylinders as the Caravan is now averaging 42 points a game. (Loyola, who will host the South Siders next Saturday, has allowed only 16 points all season -- 9 on defense.)

Quarterback Chris Sujka (above) provided most of the punch for the Mt. Carmel offense. The senior, who will play baseball next year at Indiana, completed six passes in eight attempts for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Sujka also rushed for 58 yards on five carries for another two touchdowns.

The Ramblers will clearly have their hands full next weekend in Wilmette. Loyola beat Mt. Carmel twice last year, 28-15 in Week 4 and 24-7 in the 8A quarterfinals. This Rambler team could be even better, however, and should defeat the Caravan at home.

St. Rita, meanwhile, shut out Brother Rice before a Standing Room Only crowd in the Mt. Greenwood section of Chicago.

While running back Jahwon Akui put up his usual impressive numbers (27 carries for 120 yards and one touchdown), Travis Starks, playing quarterback in the "Wildcat" formation, led the Mustangs in rushing on the day. The senior gained 140 yards on seven carries — including a 54-yard touchdown run for the final score of the game.

Also, St. Rita's defense forced two Brother Rice fumbles to bring its season total to 12.

The No. 2 Mustangs will host Loyola on October 22, the last game of the regular season. I expect both teams to enter the contest undefeated.
