Loyola and Wheaton Warrenville South...

...remain undefeated after Week 3 in Illinois high school football. Schaumburg, Stevenson and Minooka are also perfect on the year. Glenbrook South, Maine South and Montini, meanwhile, picked up their first wins of the 2010 season. And Providence -- who lost in the 6A finals last year -- is now 0-3. (That is not a misprint.)
___

Loyola beat Providence last night, 21-7, as Rambler quarterback Malcolm Weaver turned in another outstanding performance. The junior signal-caller completed 12 of 21 attempts for 234 yards, including a screen pass that accounted for a 91-yard touchdown to 6'5" receiver E. J. Webb. After a quarterback sneak from the one-yard line in the third quarter, Weaver completed his eighth touchdown pass of the season to Charlie Dowdle (above).

The Rambler defense finally allowed its first touchdown of the year on a nine-yard pass late in the fourth quarter. The Celtic offense was held to only 172 total yards on the night.

It was the first time in six attempts that Loyola beat Providence in New Lenox. Next week the Ramblers host Mt. Carmel and the Celtics travel to Brother Rice.
___

In another laugher at Red Grange Field, Wheaton Warrenville South crushed DuPage Valley Conference rival Glenbard East, 49-0. Illinois-bound (maybe) quarterback Reilly O'Toole was 5 of 8 for 185 yards, throwing for two touchdowns and running for a third before sitting out the fourth quarter.

Next week: at Naperville Central (2-1).
___

Schaumburg demolished Rolling Meadows, 47-6, as Shepard Little had another big night for the Saxons. The senior running back ran for 104 yards and scored five touchdowns, including a 58-yard reception from quarterback Mark Iannotti. (Keep your eye on Little; he could be a sleeper choice for Player of the Year.)

Next week: Elk Grove (2-1).
___

Stevenson and Minooka also advanced to 3-0. The Patriots beat Warren, 24-7, and the Indians took it to Plainfield Central, 27-7. Glenbrook South ended Deerfield's perfect season, 45-0, and Maine South got back on the winning track by shutting out Highland Park, 42-0.
___

Homewood-Flossmoor, whom I don't usually cover, beat Carl Sandburg, 29-24. My friend Kevin, who was there, reports:

After losing last week 52-49 to Evanston, it was obvious the Viking defense couldn't do the job. Tonight the lead changed hands several times and it looked like whomever had the last possession would win.

With 3 minutes left and HF up by 5, the defense held Sandburg on the Eagles' own 5-yard line and then ran out the clock for a sweet Homecoming victory. Beautiful night; huge HF crowd.

Thanks, Kev.
___

In other games of note:

Evanston edged Niles North, 38-37; Marian Catholic handed Benet its first loss of the season, 14-13; Montini entered the winning column with a 42-14 victory over Walther Lutheran; and New Trier beat Glenbrook North, 33-14.

Correction: St. Rita plays at Brother Rice tonight.
