M. Scott Carpenter, one...

...of NASA's original "astronauts," died at age 88.

Carpenter was featured in the 1979 book The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe, "which told how the original astronauts reflected the coolness-under-pressure ethos of the test pilot."

The book was made into a movie in 1983. Good flick; even better book.
