...that underachieves in the scheduling department is Maine South.
To say that Dave Inserra's Hawks are perennial 8A contenders is an understatement; before getting upset by Stevenson in Round 2 of the playoffs last year, the Park Ridge squad had won the state title in the previous three years. And this year they will be led by the top-ranked quarterback in the state, Matt Alviti, according to ESPN. So why don't these guys play a tougher schedule?
Okay, okay, I know what you're thinking: But they play Wheaton Warrenville South every year! And you're right; God bless them for that. But they also play Warren (3-7 last year), Niles North (3-6), Niles West (2-7), Evanston (a weak 5-5 team) and Waukegan (3-6). Those are five gimmes! Oh, sure, the Hawks also play Deerfield (6-4), New Trier (6-4) and Glenbrook South (8-4), but -- honestly -- when was the last time one of those teams even came close to beating Maine South? (Last year the Hawks beat those three schools by a combined score of 133-52.)
Now even though you're in a relatively weak conference, Coach Inserra, couldn't you at least drop Warren and pick up a better non-conference opponent?
