Andrew Rosenthal wants to know...

...who, exactly, is backing Mitt Romney for president. In a piece in the Times yesterday, Rosenthal wrote (my emphasis):

If you’ve been wondering where the 1-percenters are placing their bets in the presidential race, the agonizing suspense is over. The so-called “super PACs” have filed their disclosure forms for the last three months of 2011 and the winner is … Mitt Romney. I know. I was stunned, too.

Mr. Romney’s “independent” PAC, Restore Our Future (that name always give me a chuckle) got 10 donations of $1 million each, including one from a former top executive at Bain Capital, the leveraged-buyout firm that Mr. Romney helped start. There’s nothing quite like having the key to the executive washroom. The list of hedge-fund managers and former Bain partners goes on into the folks who could only afford $500,000 or a measly $250,000.

Restore Our Future also received $1 million from John Paulson, a billionaire hedge-fund operator who is best known for having gotten rich betting against the subprime mortgage market. And $1 million from Bob Perry, the Houston homebuilder who helped finance Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the organization that spread lies about John Kerry in the 2004 presidential campaign.

It reminds me of something Bill Maher once said, "I can see why the top one percent votes Republican, but why would anyone else?"
