Dede Scozzafava dropped out...

...of the race for the 23rd Congressional District in New York, and the RNC has decided to back the Conservative candidate, Doug Hoffman. This clears the way for a two-man race in the district and a probable Republican victory.

The implications for the GOP extend much further, however. For starters, it's a big win for the Sarah Palin-Tea Party wing of the Republican party and a big loss for Newt Gingrich and the GOP establishment. But it could turn out to be a Pyrrhic victory for the ideologues. In a time when only one in five Americans identifies with the GOP, is a more conservative Republican Party going to attract voters going forward? I'll bet not.
