Illinois high school football playoffs...

...got underway Friday night with Mt. Carmel defeating Naperville Central, 42-21, and New Trier eliminating Lane, 31-10. Other victors in Class 8A (the largest) included Bartlett, Fremd, Bolingbrook, Hinsdale Central, Belleville East, Marist, and Lincoln-Way East.

In Class 7A, it was Carmel over Wheeling, 45-33, and St. Rita over Bradley-Bourbonnais, 44-0. Mayor Daley's alma mater, De La Salle, also advanced, as did Woodstock and Crystal Lake South. And it was Downers Grove North in a squeaker over Wheaton Warrenville South, 8-7.

Class 6A saw Highland Park defeat Prairie Ridge, 35-28, and Providence blank Oak Forest, 30-0. Joliet Catholic, where Rudy prepped for his famous career at Notre Dame, also won.
