Wheaton Warrenville South remains on top...

...by beating No. 10 Wheaton North, 42-14. Illinois-bound quarterback Reilly O'Toole (above) completed 14 of 15 passes for 291 yards and four touchdowns.

Meanwhile, on the South Side, No. 3 St. Rita made it three in a row over No. 14 Mt. Carmel, 35-14. The Mustangs returned two punts for touchdowns and running back Jahwon Akui (above) scored two more as St. Rita (6-0) took sole possession of first place in the Catholic League Blue. The Mustangs still have to get past Providence next week and No. 15 Loyola on October 22.

Speaking of the Ramblers, the Wilmette squad had no trouble with Brother Rice last night, defeating the Crusaders, 49-27. Junior quarterback Malcolm Weaver had a big night, passing for 369 yards and six touchdowns (in only three quarters), including one to Charlie Dowdle and two to E. J. Webb (above). How did this team not beat Mt. Carmel?

And in what must have been the Game of the Night, No. 13 Stevenson upset No. 4 Lake Zurich on the road, 24-23, in the last three seconds. Quarterback Kevin Earl led the Patriots on a 12-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in a 2-yard touchdown by running back Joe Cassata (above), his second of the night. (Why do I keep thinking Stevenson will meet up with Loyola in the playoffs?)

In other games last night (and there were other games):

No. 6 Carmel blanked Benet, 42-0; No. 8 Joliet Catholic beat St. Viator, 48-19; No. 19 Elk Grove topped Wheeling, 35-15; Maine South crushed Evanston, 49-8; New Trier bested Niles West, 28-14; Minooka outlasted Oswego East, 42-31; Homewood-Flossmoor defeated Bolingbrook, 19-6; Montini buried Marian Central, 35-6; and Notre Dame just got past St. Patrick, 28-20.
