Barney F. Hajiro, a World War II...

...Medal of Honor winner, died at age 94. Wait a minute -- "Barney?" That's got to be a nickname or something. No, according to the Times:

Barney Fushimi Hajiro, the oldest of nine children, was born on Sept. 16, 1916, in Puunene, on the island of Maui...

I'll be darned. His obit continues:

...where his parents had immigrated from Hiroshima during World War I.

Good move.

Still, that first name seems odd to me, somehow. Especially when you consider that he had two brothers, Tokuro and Umeo. But maybe giving your first male born a Western name is some obscure Japanese-Hawaiian custom. After all, it says he was survived by his son, Glenn.

Oh, and one more thing. The article says that growing up,

The family was so poor that the children were given a bottle of soda only on New Year’s Day.

Do you think his kids and grandchildren ever got tired of hearing that?
