In case you've been...

Loyola coach John Holecek.
...too busy watching the Olympics (or distracted by Donald Trump's latest gaffe) to think about Illinois high school football, here's the preseason Top Ten from MaxPreps:

1. Loyola
2. Palatine
3. Prairie Ridge
4. Glenbard West
5. Cary-Grove
6. Neuqua Valley
7. Montini
8. Benet
9. Nazareth
10. Brother Rice

Last year, Loyola, Glenbard West, Montini and Phillips were all undefeated at 14-0. (Possible subject for a future post: Are the best teams running away from the pack?)

In the meantime, here are some noteworthy games (so far) for Week One:

Friday, August 26

Palatine at Stevenson
Prairie Ridge at Cary-Grove
Glenbard West at Bolingbrook
Montini at Maine South
St. Laurence at Benet

Sunday, August 28

Brother Rice at Marist at Soldier Field

Glenbard West @ Bolingbrook should be a helluva game this year.

If you say so. But last year the Hilltoppers beat Bolingbrook, 28-7. This year MaxPreps has the Raiders ranked only No. 43. If you ask me, that program has been in decline ever since Aaron Bailey left.

Last year's game was a defensive struggle. All everything RB Sam Brodner had 50 yards on 25+ carries. Neither team had a drive of any significant distance. And West scored on a kickoff return and 4th down broken pass play. This was a 14-0 Glenbard West team against a 5-5 Bolingbrook. I don't know anything about MaxPreps but the idea that you would find 43 schools in Illinois better than either of these two is absurd.

I also like Palatine vs Stevenson to be a great game. The Pirates return a lot from a team that had Loyola on the brink. Also Waubonsie Valley looks to be really strong with most of their starters back.

Maybe you're right. After all, Bolingbrook was the only team to beat Homewood-Flossmoor in the regular season last year.
