I can't make it this year, but I'm putting the Little Rose Bowl, above, of West Branch High School in Iowa on my Bucket List:
"It was dredged out (in the shape of a bowl) by local residents in the
early 1900s by teams of horses and mules," veteran football coach Butch
Pedersen related. "We have guardrails and people sit on them. They set
out chairs on Wednesday for a Friday night game. They sit on lawn
chairs, blankets and the top of their cars. We are surrounded by people.
It's a really cool atmosphere. It's the center of our community."
West Branch is less than four hours from my house and the Bears have a great football tradition, once winning 62 regular season games in a row. Heading into their final contest tonight, the squad is 6-2 and has outscored its opponents in the last four games, 215-50.
