A story in the Times this morning,...

..."Polygamist Sect Leader Extradited to Texas for Trial," was accompanied by the above photograph. The caption reads, "Warren S. Jeffs, no hat, was arraigned Wednesday in Texas."

And I thought, yeah, I guess that is the easiest way to identify Jeffs -- he's the only one in the picture without a ten-gallon hat. And then I thought, why are all those other guys wearing the same hat? Is it a Texas thing? Are they Texas Rangers, or something? Is that part of the uniform in the twenty-first century? Is it mandatory?

"Where's your hat, Johnson?"

"I guess I left it at home."

"Well, then, you'll just have to go back and get it."

Or do they all just imagine themselves as Cartwrights?
