Who is Montini?

Montini Catholic High School is named after Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini (puff, puff), who became Pope Paul VI (above) in 1963, the year the school was first planned. (When parents give their kid that many names, he's got to be destined for greatness. After all, you don't hear of anyone named Bill Jones ascending to the papacy.) The Lombard school opened its doors in 1966 and has a current enrollment of about 700 students.

Since taking up football in 1968, Montini has had 35 winning seasons in 42 years, with an overall record of 270-158-3. The Broncos play in the Suburban Catholic Conference and are coached by Chris Andriano, who is in his 33rd year. Andriano has already been inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Montini has appeared in the playoffs for 16 straight seasons, with two state championships, in 2009 (Class 5A) and 2004 (Class 4A).

This year, Montini returns 12 starters from the 2009 squad that beat Joliet Catholic, 29-28, in one of last year's best games.

The Broncos offense is anchored by the Westerkamp cousins, quarterback Matt and wide receiver Jordan. Matt has big shoes to fill, as graduating senior quarterback Brandon Pechloff took his cannon of an arm to Western Carolina this year. Matt has a bevy of first-rate receivers to throw to. Jordan caught 51 passes last year for 1,156 yards and 16 touchdowns, including one in the title game. Only a junior, he's already been offered a scholarship by the University of Illinois. Matt can also throw to junior Anthony Taylor, another speedster who caught 40 passes last year for 445 yards and 8 touchdowns. And if those two are covered, Matt can also look to Dan Smego and Anthony Damato.

The place-kicker is Matt Kersten, another Division I prospect.

The offensive line is strong, too, with center Mac Robinson and tackle Pat Suffield as returning starters. They are joined by Zach Taylor and Fred Beaugard.

The Broncos' defense is particularly experienced. Ross Ferraro returns as a three-year starting tackle, with Frank Montalto and Zech "Bubba" Tredenick (10 sacks) at defensive ends. Alex Walters is another three-year starter at middle linebacker and is joined by outside linebacker Doug Diedrick, whose 135 tackles led the 2009 squad. The defensive backs include Frank Baer, Tom Desmond, Tom Lentine and J.R. Campise.

Montini has had a number of all-staters, beginning with linebacker Lewis Borsellino in 1974. He was followed in 1999 by Michael Borsellino, in 2002 by Anthony Borsellino, in 2004 by Joey Borsellino, and in 2007 by John Borsellino.

The Ramblers will have their hands full with this team. But Loyola's defense will carry the day, 14-7.
